Storm Proofing Your Yard
November 30/2021

As a result of climate change we have experienced bizarre weather around the globe. Unprecedented storms have become more common and often have devastating effects. What can be done to prepare your backyard and swimming pool in preparation for the next storm? Here are a few tips.

Put loose and unnecessary items in storage. This includes pool toys, floats, umbrellas and other items that could be blown around by strong winds. Even heavy items can pose a threat if they are too close to the pool. If they can't be stored inside, large items such as patio furniture and BBQs should be secured or tied down to avoid being blown into the pool or causing other damage. This is also true of flower pots, hanging baskets and yard tools.

Keep your pool clean by covering it with an appropriate cover. Mesh covers and leaf nets are ideal for this scenario as they help catch leaves and other large debris. If covering the pool isn't an option, you can anticipate a heavy cleanup after the storm subsides. Removing that debris as soon as possible will lower the chances of developing an algae bloom. You may need to shock the pool, rebalance the water or even lower the water level if their has been excessive rainfall.

If there are any power outages during or following the storm, be sure to check on your pump and other equipment to ensure they are running again. Some components may reset to factory defaults and could require reprogramming so double check your settings if you use automation or variable speed pumps.

Above all, do not swim during a storm. Being in a body of water can be very dangerous, particularly during a lightning storm. High winds can also turn virtually anything into a projectile. So plan ahead, stay indoors and wait for the storm to subside. This too shall pass.
